Go First Challenge Week 5: Send an Email

When I was in college, I had a new email from a friend waiting in my inbox each and every day. Our high school group just so happened to be a group of seven, and one bossy member insisted that each of us select a day of the week and send an email to the group on that day. (Me. The bossy one was me.)

We still talk about those emails and how they tethered us together, to home, to who we were and who we were becoming.  We reread some of them once, cringing at our angst and the self-important day-to-day of college girls. It’s a practice we keep meaning to pick back up, but never quite do.

Email seems to have changed since the aughts, gone are the days of friendly letters and, thankfully, chain mail. Instead, we open inboxes to a million ads and so much business - reminders, meeting alerts, and customer service requests whether you’re in customer service or not.

These days, it’s my kids’ teachers and principal I find myself sending a “just saying hello and thank you” emails. I’m hoping to offset the heavy and hard messages in their inbox, a glimmer of kindness amongst the rest.

Brooke and I thought Send an Email would be a great, tangible challenge for this week. It costs you nothing except a few minutes of your time, but makes a difference.

Who is someone in your life who receives more criticism than care? Your pastor? Your admin? Your kid’s baseball coach? Send them an email that’s short on words, but long on encouragement.

And then let us know how it went! Drop Brooke a comment on her Substack or Instagram. I’d love to hear all about it in a comment here or on Facebook or Instagram.

Keep going, friends! We’re doing good things!

Cheering you on,
